Generative AI & Cybersecurity: 5 Threats You Can’t Ignore

Generative AI is quietly moving into everything: our browsers, inboxes, document systems, CRM tools, and even internal chats. We ask it to summarize contracts, draft emails, explore ideas – and in the process, we often feed it a lot of sensitive data.

AI is incredibly useful, but it also changes your security surface in ways that aren’t always obvious. Below are five key security risks of generative AI and what you can do to prepare.

1. “Weekend projects” disguised as serious AI tools

Generative AI makes it very easy to launch a product: a quick UI, an API call to a model, and suddenly it’s marketed as “the AI copilot for X”.

The risk:

  • Some AI apps are built in a rush, with little thought to:
    • Secure coding practices
    • Data handling
    • Storage, logging, or deletion policies
  • They may look polished on the surface but have no real security or privacy controls underneath.

What you can do:

  • Prefer tools from vendors with a clear track record, not just viral landing pages.
  • Look for at least basic security signals: documented privacy policy, data retention rules, and where data is stored.
  • For higher-risk use (customer data, internal docs), ask for:
    • Third-party security testing / audits
    • Clear statements on whether your data is used to train their models

2. More data in more places = higher breach and identity-theft risk

Generative AI tools often need context: documents, emails, customer records, internal notes. That’s their power—but it’s also the risk.

The problem:

  • AI assistants sometimes:
    • Scan inboxes, drives, or CRMs to “personalize” answers
    • Store prompts and responses in logs
  • If the vendor has weak security, a breach could expose:
    • Personal information
    • Access tokens / API keys
    • Internal business data

What you can do:

  • Treat AI tools like any other third-party SaaS that touches sensitive data.
  • Check:
    • Do they encrypt data at rest and in transit?
    • Do they clearly limit who inside the company can see your data?
    • Can you turn off data retention / training where needed?
  • For highly sensitive work (finance, legal, medical, HR):
    • Prefer enterprise / compliance-oriented AI setups
    • Or keep that data in non-networked, offline workflows

3. Insecure AI-generated code and apps

Developers increasingly use AI to write code or even whole features. That’s powerful – and dangerous if treated as “correct by default”.

The risks:

  • Studies have shown a large chunk of AI-generated code contains vulnerabilities (e.g., insecure defaults, missing checks).
  • Small changes to prompts or comments can change whether the model suggests safe or unsafe patterns.
  • If this code ships straight to production, you might be:
    • Bypassing your normal review standards
    • Adding subtle security flaws you don’t notice until later

What you can do:

  • Treat AI as a junior assistant, not a senior engineer:
    • Always run code reviews and security checks on AI-generated code.
    • Use linters, SAST/DAST tools, and dependency scanning as usual.
  • Train devs specifically on:
    • Common AI-introduced vulnerabilities
    • How to prompt for safer patterns (e.g. “use parameterized queries”, “avoid storing secrets in code”)

4. Leaking confidential data through prompts

One of the biggest, most immediate risks: employees pasting sensitive information directly into public AI tools.

Common examples:

  • Drafting:
    “Rewrite this client proposal” → long prompt with pricing, roadmap, strategy.
  • Legal & HR:
    “Summarize this dispute / performance issue” → internal details about people.
  • Product & R&D:
    “Help me simplify this architecture” → proprietary diagrams, code, or algorithms.

Once this data is sent:

  • It may be logged by the provider.
  • It may be accessible to support staff.
  • Depending on the settings, it may be used to improve models.

What you can do:

  • Create clear internal rules:
    • What must never be pasted into public AI tools (trade secrets, client identifiers, PII, health data, etc.).
    • When it’s ok to use anonymized / redacted versions.
  • Provide safer alternatives:
    • Enterprise AI environments with stricter data controls
    • On-prem or VPC-hosted solutions where feasible
  • Add technical guardrails where possible:
    • DLP (data loss prevention) tools that detect sensitive data leaving the org
    • Monitoring which AI domains extensions connect to

5. Deepfakes and AI-boosted social engineering

Generative AI doesn’t just help defenders – it supercharges attackers too.

Two big areas:

  1. Deepfakes & synthetic identities
    • Voice and face can now be cloned from short samples.
    • That opens the door to:
      • Fraudulent “CEO calls” requesting urgent payments
      • Bypassing voice or face-based verification in weak systems
  2. Hyper-personalized phishing
    • AI can scrape public information and generate:
      • Perfectly written, local-language phishing emails
      • Targeted messages referencing your posts, company, or clients
    • Spoof websites and fake login pages are easier to generate and iterate at scale.

What you can do:

  • Avoid using voice or face alone as strong authentication.
  • Reinforce internal rules like:
    • “No financial transfers purely based on chat / call – always verify through a second channel.”
  • Regularly train teams on:
    • New phishing examples
    • How good AI-generated messages can look (no more broken English to rely on)

How to build a safer AI strategy (without giving up AI)

You don’t need to abandon AI. You just need to treat it as part of your security perimeter, not a magical side toy.

Here’s a practical starting checklist:

1. Set simple internal rules

Document and share:

  • ✅ What AI tools are approved
  • ❌ What data is never allowed into public AI tools
  • ✅ When anonymization / redaction is required
  • ✅ Who to ask before connecting new AI apps to company systems

Even a one-page internal guide is better than silence.

2. Vet vendors like you would for any critical SaaS

For tools that access emails, documents, or customer data, look for:

  • Clear data retention and deletion policies
  • Where data is stored (region / cloud provider)
  • Option to disable training on your data
  • Independent security testing / certifications where relevant

3. Update your security training for the AI era

Add AI-specific modules to your existing security awareness:

  • How prompts can leak confidential data
  • Why “AI code” still needs review
  • Examples of AI-generated phishing and deepfakes
  • When to escalate if something feels off

4. Double down on the “boring basics”

Because attackers are getting faster and more scalable with AI, your fundamentals matter even more:

  • Keep OS and software patched and updated.
  • Use modern endpoint protection / anti-malware.
  • Enforce strong authentication:
    • Password managers
    • Multi-factor authentication (MFA)
    • Passkeys where supported
  • Back up critical data and test restore procedures.
  • Review access rights regularly (least privilege).

Final thoughts: use AI, but don’t use it blindly

We’re very much pro-AI – it’s the core of what we teach and build around. But “move fast and break things” is a risky mindset when what breaks might be your customers’ data or your own reputation.

The healthy approach:

  • Explore AI tools.
  • Experiment.
  • Let them save you time and unlock new workflows.

Just do it with your eyes open, policies in place, and security basics taken seriously.
